About Us...........The Role of the Louisiana State Board of Embalmers and Funeral Directors The Louisiana State Board of Embalmers and Funeral Directors (LSBEFD) is committed to ensuring that individuals entering the professions of embalming, funeral directing, and cremations meet and uphold the qualifications, standards, and professionalism required to competently serve the public in Louisiana. All applicants must satisfy established education, experience, and examination criteria before licensure is granted. Each application is carefully reviewed by the Board to ensure compliance with these minimum requirements. Licensed embalmers, funeral directors, and crematory retort operators are equipped with the knowledge, skills, and professional competencies necessary to effectively meet the needs of their clients, the public, and their communities. The LSBEFD investigates complaints involving licensed establishments or individuals, including cases of unlicensed practice, and takes disciplinary action when violations of the law or professional standards are confirmed. As public health professionals, licensed embalmers, funeral directors, and crematory retort operators play a critical role in protecting public welfare. They are required to complete formal education, pass rigorous examinations, gain supervised experience, and participate in ongoing continuing education to maintain current knowledge and best practices in the field. The LSBEFD takes its mandate to protect the public seriously but operates strictly within the scope of its regulatory authority. If you believe that a licensed establishment or professional is in violation of the laws governing funeral service practice, you are encouraged to file a complaint with the Board. Please note that while the LSBEFD does not initiate complaints with local law enforcement, individuals are encouraged to contact the appropriate authorities should they wish to pursue criminal prosecution. - The Louisiana State Board of Embalmers and Funeral Directors
